How do gut bacteria affect metabolism?

What do short-chain fatty acids do?

Research shows SCFAs stimulate the secretion of GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) — a hormone your intestinal L-cells release that signals fullness and supports glucose regulation — acting through the free fatty-acid receptor FFAR2.[1] Propionate in particular has been shown to stimulate GLP-1 and the related satiety hormone PYY.[2] This is the body’s own satiety pathway, nudged by your own microbes.
