Alflorex and Anxiety: What the Evidence Really Shows

Short answer: Alflorex is a single probiotic strain — Bifidobacterium longum 35624 — that is studied and sold mainly for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), not for anxiety. If gut symptoms like pain and bloating are feeding your anxiety, calming the gut may help you feel steadier. But the direct human evidence for this specific strain and anxiety is limited, and the stress-reduction findings people often cite actually come from different Bifidobacterium longum strains. That gap is the whole point: with gut-brain support, the strain is the medicine, and the right one for you depends on your own gut.

What is Alflorex?

Alflorex is a probiotic supplement built around one bacterium: Bifidobacterium longum 35624 (the same strain sold in the United States as Align). It is the product of decades of research on that single strain, and it is marketed for the everyday management of IBS symptoms. When people search “Alflorex and anxiety,” they are usually asking a fair question — my gut and my mood seem linked, so would this gut product help my head too? The honest answer starts with what the strain was actually tested for.

What Alflorex is proven to do: IBS symptoms

The strength of B. longum 35624 is in the gut. In an eight-week clinical follow-up study of people with IBS, the total symptom score fell 43.5% (from a mean of 12.3 to 6.97), and more than 60% of participants reached a clinically meaningful reduction in symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and bowel trouble (Lenoir et al., Probiotics and Antimicrobial Proteins, 2023). That is a real, useful effect — on the gut.

Does Alflorex help anxiety?

Here is where it gets more careful. The gut and brain are in constant two-way conversation along the gut–brain axis — “bidirectional communication between the central and the enteric nervous system” (Carabotti et al., 2015), which is why easing IBS can, indirectly, take the edge off the worry that rides along with it. But that is different from a strain that acts on anxiety directly. The well-known stress result in this family of bacteria belongs to a different strain: in a randomized, placebo-controlled trial of 45 healthy adults, six weeks of Bifidobacterium longum NCC3001 cut perceived stress by 21.4% versus placebo (Boehme et al., Nutrients, 2023). NCC3001 is not the strain in Alflorex. So the fair summary is: B. longum 35624 is an IBS strain with limited direct anxiety evidence, and the anxiety data people cite is often from its cousins.

This is not a knock on Alflorex — it is doing exactly what it was designed to do. It is a reminder that strain-specific is the rule in this field. Different bacteria make different signals; certain gut bacteria produce “GABA by the Bifidobacteria family” and “GABA and acetylcholine by the Lactobacilli family” (Sarkar et al., 2016), and about 95% of the body's serotonin is stored in the gut (Martin et al., 2018). Which of those bacteria you carry is personal.

The catch with picking one famous strain

Choosing a probiotic by its reputation is a bet that the strain that helped the average person in a study is the strain you are missing. Sometimes it is. Often it is not. That is why two people can take the same well-reviewed probiotic and have opposite experiences. For the gut–brain layer especially, the useful question is not “what is the best strain?” but “what does my gut actually need?” See how gut health affects mental health and the gut–brain axis explained.

How Flore approaches it differently

Flore (formerly Sun Genomics) starts from your data instead of from a single strain. A gut microbiome test is the front door; from your results, Flore builds a formula from what is actually in your gut — up to 68 curated strains plus 40+ prebiotics, matched to you and refined against more than 40,000 formulations. If you would rather begin simple, The Calm One is a GoodOnes™ single-strain synbiotic for everyday focus and calm, and The Bright One is for everyday mood support — each $49 (Subscribe & Save $44.10). None of this treats anxiety; it is structure/function support for a gut community that takes part in the gut–brain conversation.
