Do probiotics help you sleep? Honestly: maybe, a little, for some people. A diverse gut microbiome is associated with better, more efficient sleep, and pooled analyses of randomized trials find that probiotic supplements can produce a small improvement in sleep quality — but the effect is modest, the studies are small and mixed, and no probiotic is a treatment for insomnia or any sleep disorder. The more useful takeaway is that your gut and your sleep genuinely talk to each other through the gut–brain axis, so caring for your microbiome is one reasonable lever among several — alongside the sleep basics that do the heaviest lifting.
Do probiotics help you sleep?
The best current summary comes from meta-analyses that pool randomized controlled trials. A 2024 meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials found that "probiotic supplementation improves sleep states to some extent in adults with sleep disorders and healthy adults with condition-induced sleep disorders," reporting a small but statistically significant pooled effect on sleep measures (standardized mean difference −0.34, 95% CI −0.56 to −0.13; p = 0.001).
Two honest caveats from that same analysis: it pooled just 11 randomized trials, and the authors cautioned that "the sample sizes of our included studies were generally small," that "strains, doses, and durations varied among studies, and the conclusion was not generalizable," and that "further high-quality researches are needed." In other words, the direction is encouraging and the signal is real, but the effect is small and the evidence is still early. Probiotics are a supporting player for sleep, not a sleeping pill.
How is your gut connected to sleep?
The connection runs through the gut–brain axis — the two-way communication network between your microbiome and your brain. A 2018 review in Integrative Medicine: A Clinician's Journal describes four channels: a neurologic pathway ("the vagus nerve, the enteric nervous system, and the activity of neurotransmitters within the GI tract"), an endocrine pathway, a humoral/metabolic pathway driven by bacterial metabolites "most importantly short-chain fatty acids," and an immune pathway via cytokines.
Two of those channels matter especially for sleep. First, serotonin: the same review notes that "the gut provides approximately 95% of total body serotonin," and that short-chain fatty acids "regulate the synthesis of gut-derived serotonin from enterochromaffin cells." Serotonin is a key signaling molecule in mood and sleep regulation, and the review adds that it "is capable of locally activating afferent nerve endings that are connected directly to the central nerve system." Second, the immune channel: gut bacteria shape inflammatory signaling, and some of those same signals influence sleep (more on that below). The review's bottom line is that "enteric microbiota extensively and profoundly influences the gut-brain relationship (ie, mental state, emotional regulation, neuromuscular function, and regulation of the HPA)" — the HPA axis being your central stress-and-cortisol system, which is tightly bound up with sleep.
Where melatonin fits
Melatonin is the hormone people most associate with sleep. As the U.S. National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) explains, "melatonin is a hormone that your brain produces in response to darkness. It helps with the timing of your circadian rhythms (24-hour internal clock) and with sleep." Worth knowing before you reach for a melatonin bottle: NCCIH also notes "there's not enough strong evidence on the effectiveness or safety of melatonin supplementation for chronic insomnia to recommend its use," and that "short-term use of melatonin supplements appears to be safe for most people, but information on the long-term safety of supplementing with melatonin is lacking." Your gut's role here is upstream and indirect — through serotonin and gut–brain signaling — not a claim that a probiotic raises your melatonin.
What does the research on gut bacteria and sleep show?
Beyond supplement trials, observational research links the makeup of your microbiome to how you actually sleep. A 2019 study in PLOS ONE that paired at-home sleep tracking (actigraphy) with gut microbiome sampling found that "total microbiome diversity was positively correlated with increased sleep efficiency and total sleep time, and was negatively correlated with wake after sleep onset" — that is, people with more diverse guts tended to sleep more efficiently and wake less during the night. It also reported that "richness within the phyla Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes were positively correlated with sleep efficiency."
The study even tied in the immune channel, finding the inflammatory messenger interleukin-6 (IL-6) "positively associated with microbiome richness" and correlated with total sleep time — IL-6 being a cytokine long noted for its effects on sleep. The authors framed it carefully as "a novel association between sleep health and gut microbiome diversity." Association, not proof of cause — but it points the same direction as the trial data: a richer, more diverse gut tends to travel with better sleep.
When should you take probiotics — morning or night?
This is one of the most-searched probiotic questions, and the honest answer is that the evidence does not establish a magic time of day for sleep. In the randomized trials summarized above, the intervention that mattered was consistent daily supplementation over weeks, not a dose timed to bedtime. So the practical guidance is: pick a time you will actually remember every day and stick with it. Many people take a probiotic with a meal or on a consistent morning or evening routine; consistency and duration are what the studies had in common, not a specific clock time. If a particular product carries manufacturer directions (for example, with food or on an empty stomach), follow those.
Do probiotics make you sleepy?
No — probiotics are not sedatives, and there is no evidence they make you drowsy on the spot the way a sleep medication might. Any sleep benefit seen in the trials built up gradually over weeks of daily use and showed up as modestly better sleep quality, not immediate sleepiness. If anything makes the case for probiotics and sleep, it is slow, cumulative support for a healthier gut environment — not a same-night knockout effect.
Which probiotics are best for sleep?
There is no single "sleep strain" the evidence crowns as best. The trials in the 2024 meta-analysis used a range of different strains, doses, and durations, which is exactly why the authors said the results "were not generalizable." - Get the sleep basics right first. MedlinePlus (NIH/NLM) recommends adults aim for "7-9 hours a day," and lists habits that help: "go to bed and wake up at the same time every day," "avoid caffeine, especially in the afternoon and evening," "exercise regularly, but not too close to bedtime," and "keep your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet." These do more for most people's sleep than any supplement.
